Sundarban is the world’s largest mangrove forest. It was named by the tree ‘sundori’. In bangle the meaning of sundarban is as ‘the beautiful forest’. It is famous for the living place of Royal Bengal Tiger. The world’s largest number of tigers inhabit there. It is located at the southern part of Bangladesh. . For miles and miles, the lofty treetops form an unbroken canopy, while nearer the ground, works of high and ebb-tide marked on the soil and tree trunks and the many varieties of the natural mangrove forest have much to offer to an inquisitive visitor.
The sundarban is a cluster of islands, with an approximate area of around 6000 km. the sundarban is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests. It contains a wide variety of wildlife including various species of birds, spotted dear, crocodiles, snake and ape. This forest is known as Royal Bengal tiger’s living palace. It is assumed that around 500 royal Bengal tiger and around 30000 spotted dear lives in this area. It is declared by the UNESCO as a world heritage site in 1997. It is also designated as a ramsar site at may 21, 1992.
Sundarban contains a world’s largest mangrove ecosystem. To the south it meets with the bay of Bengal, to the east it is bordered by the Baleswar River and to the north there is a sharp interface with intensively cultivated land.
The main flora of this area are sundori, geoa, keora , many kinds of bamboos, golpata etc. Many people live here by collecting golpata and collecting honeys and bee-wax. Sundarban provides almost 45% of all timber and fuel wood output of the country.
The most spectacular things of this forest is a Royal Bengal Tiger swimming across the streams. If you are lucky, you may observe this.
